The short answer
US applications for fall entry run on a fixed calendar: the Common App opens August 1, early deadlines land November 1, regular deadlines land in early January, decisions arrive by early April, and you commit by May 1. Working back from that, a Pakistani applicant should start seriously about 18 months before enrolling.
What is the shape of the US admissions calendar?
Everything anchors to fall enrollment, which begins in August or September. For entry in Fall 2028, the deadlines that matter sit between November 2027 and January 2028. The biggest mistake Pakistani applicants make is discovering this calendar six months too late, after board exams have swallowed the year.
Early Decision (ED) is a binding early application to one dream school, decided by mid-December. Early Action (EA) is early but not binding. Regular Decision (RD) is the standard January round. Early rounds can help, but never let them rush unfinished essays or a retaken SAT.
18 to 12 months out: build the foundation
Roughly your first year of FSc or A-Level year 12:
- Start SAT prep and book a first attempt, leaving room for a retake.
- Go deep, not wide, in two or three activities you genuinely care about. Depth reads better than a padded list.
- Start a longlist of 20 to 30 universities, noting aid policies for internationals next to each.

12 to 6 months out: the summer of essays
The summer before your final school year is when strong applications are actually built:
- Cut the longlist to 10 to 15 schools across ambition levels, keeping full-need schools at the core.
- Draft your main Common App essay in June or July. Plan on many drafts.
- Line up your two teacher recommendations and brief your school on the counselor letter and school profile before the term starts.
- Finish English proficiency testing.
- The Common App opens August 1: fill the base application early.
6 to 0 months out: deadlines and decisions
- November 1: ED and most EA deadlines, with CSS Profile due alongside at most schools.
- Mid-December: early results: admit, deny, or deferral into the regular round.
- January 1 to 15: Regular Decision deadlines, aid forms again attached.
- March to early April: RD decisions and aid offers. Compare net cost, not prestige alone.
- May 1: national commitment deadline. Deposit at exactly one university.
After the admit: the part nobody plans for
